It’s that time of year again. Time to find a way to make your life a little better starting January 1st. Around the beginning of the year, we get the question “what should my resolution be” all the time, and today we decided to give you 9 of our best resolutions for anyone trying to improve their dental health in the new year. Our recommendation is to pick one that you can fully commit to and run with it. From flossing daily, to cutting down your sugar intake these resolutions are items that will drastically improve your dental health.
Visit the Dentist Regularly
First on our list is hands down the most important. Setting up regular appointments with your dentist is the best way to avoid dental problems in the future as they can catch possible problems early. We recommend seeing a dentist at least once a year, but for many patients who have had problems in the past, it may be more frequent.
Floss Every Day
Hands down the practice that most patients miss is flossing. Flossing however is one of the most important factors when looking at dental health. For 2023 our highest recommendation is to make sure you get into a routine of flossing once a day either in the morning or at night.
Brush the Full 2 Minutes
The second item a lot of people miss is brushing for the full two minutes. This is extremely important and studies have shown time and time again that 2 minutes of brushing is the adequate time frame. Our recommendation is to set a timer and run for 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. Quadrants are shown below:
If you smoke, use 2023 as your time to quit. Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your mouth and can lead to cavities, lost teeth, or worse. It’s never too late to quit and there are tons of great programs out there to assist you in stopping.
Cut Down on Snacking
Unfortunately snacking isn’t the best for your teeth either. Studies have shown that snacking has a direct correlation to tooth decay. Snacking can lead to plaque buildup and eventually cavities. Our recommendation is to limit your snacking and focus on eating three big meals a day.
Invest in an Electric Toothbrush
The easiest new years resolution on our list is to buy an electric toothbrush. This will run you anywhere from $30-$100 dollars but will save you thousands in the long run by how effective they are to traditional toothbrushes. Make sure to buy a “Sonic” toothbrush as they have been shown to work the best.
Drink Less Sugary Drinks
If you can believe it drinking sugary drinks is one of the most common reasons people suffer from tooth decay. Sugary drinks like pops, juices, and shakes coat the teeth in sugar. Lowering your intake of sugary drinks and transitioning to water will substantially lower your risk of dental problems.
Drink More Water
You may wonder, what does water have to do with dental new year resolutions? Well, let us tell you. Water is actually one of the most powerful ways that you keep your teeth from decaying. Water helps to wash down food particles while preventing the accumulation of cavity-causing bacteria. In this way, drinking water prevents tooth decay. Additionally, most
Invest In Your Smile
Do you not like your smile? Well, 2023 may be the year to fix it. Did you know that over a quarter of people don’t like to smile because of their teeth? That means you are definitely not alone. Luckily for you, there are a lot of ways to fix your teeth. Set up a consultation with your dentist and make sure to discuss what options are available for your situation.
