Creating a consistent dental routine can be one of the easiest ways you can keep your teeth strong and avoid going to the dentist with aches and pains. The problem is, how do you know what’s the best thing to do? Well if that’s you, look no further. Today’s article will give you the inside scoop on the best nighttime dental routine for your health. Additionally, we also recently created an article on the best morning dental routine for your teeth which you can check out right here: Morning Dental Routine.
Before you begin reading this article make sure to think of your morning dental routine. With dental care, a lot of practices only need to be done once a day like flossing and mouthwash. Overuse of these items can actually damage your teeth. With that being said, these steps aren’t an exact science and can vary based on your morning routine, if you see “if applicable” that means that it should be done in either the morning OR the night. Now, with that out of the way here is our recommendation for the best nighttime dental routine.
Step 1) Ensure you are done eating and drinking for the night
The first step to our dental routine may seem silly, but you want to make sure that you start your routine after you’re done consuming things for the night. This should include all foods and any drink besides water.
Step 2) Brush your teeth
Step 2 is to brush your teeth. Our recommendation is to brush your teeth with a sonic toothbrush as it has been shown to get a better clean than the traditional type. Additionally, make sure you are brushing for 2 minutes and getting all “quadrants” of your mouth. For most, we recommend brushing your teeth around 30 minutes after finishing your last meal/drink for the night.
Step 3) Floss your teeth (if applicable)
Now, this is where the “if applicable” comes into play. We recommend that people only floss once a day so this is where it is up to you to choose if you want to do it in the morning or night.
Step 4) Use mouthwash (if applicable)
Alongside step 3 using mouthwash is another “if applicable” action. Pick a time that works best for you and choose either morning or night. Our recommendation is to use an alcohol-free mouthwash.
Step 5) Drink some water
Water is amazing, if quenches your thirst, provides vital nutrients to your body, has fluoride in it, and can be a great final step to your nighttime dental routine. Our recommendation is to do this about an hour prior to bed.
Step 6) Any additional items you find necessary
For some, this may be putting in your retainer. For others, it could be using whitening strips. The nice thing about a dental routine is that it can be catered to your needs.
