Hockey is a contact sport, and unfortunately, accidents do happen. Additionally, when you live in a big hockey hub like Duluth hockey accidents happen somewhat often. From broken teeth to missing teeth our team has cared for it all. Today’s blog we wanted to focus on the big things you should be doing as a parent to lower your child’s risk of getting a dental injury while playing hockey. Our goal is to help you to avoid having kids that are missing teeth like these guys. Thanks for reading our blog on how to lower your chances of dental injury during hockey.
1) Make them wear a properly fitting helmet at all times
The most common reason children hurt their mouths during hockey is that they weren’t wearing a helmet. Invest in a properly fitting helmet for your child and ensure they wear it as it could save their teeth and possibly their life.
2) Buy (and have them use) a mouthguard
Combined with a properly fitting helmet, wearing a mouthguard is the key to dental safety while playing hockey. You can find mouthguards at almost any big box store and they are usually extremely easy to get set to your child’s teeth.
3) Ensure they are skating on a well-maintained rink
One of the most common ways kids get injured during hockey is actually on the rink itself. Pond hockey can have extremely uneven surfaces that could lead to trips and falls.
4) Ensure your kids are playing with others who know the rules of the sport
High sticking, fights, checking and more are extremely common reasons why dental injuries arise in hockey. Make sure those who play with your child understand the rules of the game.
