5 Tips for Sensitive Teeth

Life with sensitive teeth is not fun. Many Americans who live with sensitive teeth live a life of pain. 1 in 8 Americans has tooth sensitivity, sometimes daily. It’s a condition more common among young people, especially women. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by many things including heavy brushing, grinding of teeth, excessive tooth whitening, gum disease, and more. Today’s article is here to help those individuals and give them some tips on how to mitigate the pain of sensitive teeth. If you have sensitive teeth make sure to get an appointment with your dentist as there may be more factors at play.

1) Use the proper toothpaste for your teeth

Many dentists recommend toothpaste like Sensodyne if you are affected by sensitive teeth. These products work by either soothing the nerves inside your teeth or by building a barrier over sensitive areas of your teeth. This has been known to substantially reduce the pain of sensitive teeth and many patients swear by it.

2) Use a soft-bristled toothbrush

One of the leading causes of tooth sensitivity is overbrushing. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush will help lower those chances and get you the same clean. Better yet, we recommend investing in a sonic toothbrush. These toothbrushes can really help low your chance of cavities and overbrushing.

3) Use a mouthguard at night

Grinding teeth is another common cause of tooth sensitivity. If you are feeling sensitive teeth we strongly recommend looking into purchasing a mouthguard. These guards can be bought almost anywhere and are an easy way to prevent tooth grinding that could lead to expensive dentist bills.

4) Avoid acidic foods and drinks

If you could believe it, acidic foods are not good for your teeth and can easily break down the enamel leading to tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. Our team recommends limiting your consumption of the following items.

  • Examples include coffee, pickled items, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, sports drinks, dried fruits, and fruit juice

5) Talk to your dentist about coatings or dental varnishes that could help with sensitivity

Last on our list is a procedure that could help stop the sensitivity of your teeth. In certain cases, we recommend coatings and/or dental varnishes that could help with sensitivity. For more information on this don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team and we are happy to set up a consultation.
