Snacking has been called one of the worst things you can do for overall health by many dentists. If possible, people should avoid eating outside their 3 meals a day and brush in between said meals. On the other hand, snacking is widespread, and we know that it’s almost impossible to cut it out completely. Because of that, we have created this list detailing which snacks are best for your teeth. This list is nowhere near a complete list of recommended snacks but can offer our top recommendations on what you should eat when you get hunger cravings.
Snack #1 – Yogurt & Cheese
Dairy products are one of the best things you can do for your teeth. These products are packed with nutrients like calcium that help keep your teeth strong. As always we recommend going for low-sugar options.
Snack #2 – Apples
Apples have been commonly recommended as a means of cleaning your teeth after eating because they stimulate an alkaline saliva flow that neutralizes the acids produced in dental plaque leading to less tooth decay. So the old saying should be an apple a day will keep the dentist away.
Snack #3 – Vegetables
Like Apples, vegetables also help clean plaque when you chew leading to a lower chance of plaque build-up and cavities
Snack #4 – Low Salt Popcorn
If you have ever dealt with a kernel stuck in your gums you may be surprised to read popcorn is an excellent snack for your teeth. However, popcorn offers a great “scrubber” for your teeth and like apples and vegetables can help clean plaque off your teeth while you eat.
Snack #5 – Dark Chocolate
So we know what you are thinking, “How on earth is chocolate good for my teeth?” Well, contrary to popular belief dark chocolates has been linked to a positive relationship with tooth help. Dark chocolate is a good source of polyphenols, natural chemicals that can limit oral bacteria. They are also able to neutralize microorganisms that cause bad breath. Additionally, they also prevent some bacteria from turning sugar and starches into acid, which love to wreak havoc on your teeth.
Snack #6 – Grapes
Antioxidants are critical in fighting bacteria that can lead to inflammation that would otherwise cause gum disease. Grapes are an excellent source and can protect your gums from the harmful effects of periodontal disease.
Snack #7 – Strawberries
Like Apples, strawberries offer the same stimulation that leads to an increase in alkaline saliva flow. This neutralizes the acids produced in dental plaque leading to less tooth decay.
Snack #8 – Celery
Celery is like the floss of foods and can get stuck in food particles unlodged which could lead to plaque build-up and cavities. This amazing food is also chocked full of some essential vitamins. Celery helps the mucous membrane because it has vitamin A and can also protect the tooth from loosening because of vitamin C.
